Final Phase Applied Animal Science

Bachelor of Animal Husbandry

Content programme

First year

In the first semester you will work on your chosen species, covering subjects such as nutrition, reproduction, immunology, health care and disease control, and environmental conditions and their influence on animal welfare and performance. Through lectures, feedback sessions and consultancy, you will learn methods for studying the peculiarities of that species, and how to approach a range of species-related problems. You are also likely to learn other relevant approaches from fellow students working on other species.

In the second half of the first semester, you will apply your knowledge in a project on a current problem in the livestock sector, and you will work on your research and project management skills.

The next semester is spent on a work placement at an organisation of your choosing, for example an organisation devoted to a particular species, or one specialised in a subject such as nutrition or fertility. The placement may also take you to a research institute or organisation working in animal health or policy-making.

Second year

The first semester of the second year is devoted to a minor in a subject that allows you to deepen or broaden your knowledge of a particular subject or species.

For example, you might take Livestock Management or Equine Leisure and Sports at Van Hall Larenstein. Alternatively, you might take a course at Wageningen University, or even at a university outside the Netherlands.

During the final semester, you will work on your thesis. The research you perform for this will be commissioned - either as part of an existing project or as independent research - by an animal husbandry specialist in the Netherlands or abroad. In all cases, the subject will be related to issues relevant to animal husbandry.
