Bachelor of Land and Water Management
Content programme
First year
You will immerse yourself in water-lacking areas. You will deal with subjects such as irrigation and storage of valuable (drinking) water in basins. You will also learn to conduct research in unknown regions, and how to manage natural resources.
In the modules Exploring the Delta you will study the elementary subjects of Land and Water Management. The first module consists of six theoretical subjects, vocational training and a project: System Analysis of the Dutch Delta. You will become aquainted with Hydrology, International Soil Science, Environmental Chemistry, Survey and GIS (Geographical Information Systems).
You will also learn to deal with various stakeholders in a densely populated delta. Subjects during this second module are Social Geography, Stakeholder Involvement, Tropical Edaphology and Environmental Impact Assessment. After this, you will be challenged to develop your knowledge of and skills in the technical aspects of International Watermanagement in the module Rural Engineering, including the subjects Civil Engineering, Hydrology, and Technical Computer use (CAD, GIS). At the end of the third year you will be applying your experiences in a 10-week work placement. You might do this in, for example, Eastern Europe, America, Asia, Africa or in the Netherlands.
Second year

In the second year you will be able to choose a minor, to broaden or further specialise your studies. We recommend the minor River Delta Management, offered by the course team itself. The minor RDM focuses on the competences involved in preparing a tender for a development project in the water sector. The themes include Flood Management, Irrigation and Drainage (Related to Agriculture), Drinking Water and Sanitation and Wetland Management.
This will help you learn to find, in a structured fashion, an integral and broadly supported solution for water problems in a river delta abroad.
You can also choose another minor, at Van Hall Larenstein or any other university, in the Netherlands or abroad.
The course culminates in the preparation of a thesis on an approved topic.
