Final Phase Tropical Forestry
Bachelor of Forestry and Nature Management
Career opportunities
This specialisation trains people for the sustainable management of forests, nature and integrated land use systems in the tropics. In social-economic sense the fight against poverty as part of development cooperation is stressed. This broad study offers opportunities for work in a challenging sector that is changing constantly. Graduatesfind jobs in a wide range of fields; at national or international government or non-government organisations, international development organisations and private organisations.
Some are employed in rural development programmes, such as community forestry, forestry extension, agro forestry and nature conservation. One such graduate is currently the coordinator of a participatory biodiversity conservation strategy programme in Cameroon, setting up community groups who will manage the forest. Other graduates find jobs in the more technical fields of plantation forestry, natural forest management and forest exploitation. One of them is now the manager of a tropical timber production company in Southeast Asia, another one is responsible for a tree nursery in South America.

"I really like Van Hall Larenstein's project-oriented approach! For example, small groups of us had to tackle a real problem involving a region where hopefully forest production and tourism could be combined. We had to decide whether this was possible, and, if so, how it could be implemented. It was a very interesting project!"

"Of course we have a lot of expertise on forestry in my own country. But I like to travel and to get into contact with young people from other countries. So the international atmosphere at Van Hall Larenstein attracted me - and the tropical orientation of the course made it possible for me to work in Africa."
"Tropical forests represent many things to many people."
"To get into contact with other cultures is one of the best aspects of this study."
