Population

With 16 million people living on a surface of 41,528 square kilometres, the Netherlands is the third densely populated country in the world.

 

90% of the inhabitants are ethnically Dutch, and 7% have their roots in one of the following countries: another EU member state, Indonesia, Suriname, Turkey, Morocco, or the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

 

Although living in a small country, the Dutch are major players in fields like science, economy, the arts and sports. The Netherlands has produced quite a few famous artists, painters, writers, athletes and musicians. Dutch persons have won 15 Nobel Prizes, for chemistry, physics, medicine, economics and peace.
