Final Phase Fair Trade Management

Bachelor of Agri Systems Management

Content programme

First year

The first year consists of two semesters, the first of which takes place in Van Hall Larenstein's Wageningen Forum Building. Three major themes will be addressed - value-chain development, fair trade implementation and organic agriculture - through a mixture of project assignments, support modules and 'essential skills' modules. During this semester you will also be involved in project development and appraisal, so you will find yourself giving advice to a tropical products organisation that intends to develop according to Fair Trade criteria. Sustainability will be an important topic here.

During the second semester you will do a work placement, acting as a semi-professional in the field, and applying the knowledge and skills specific to your discipline - as a communicator, lobbyist, advisor, business planner or business facilitator. For example, analyse the ability of juice and sugar producers in Latin America to comply with the requirements of the fair trade market for a labelling organisation in Europe. Or do field research in a Tanzanian Tea Institution to reduce the use of agricultural pesticides.

Second year

The first semester comprises of a twenty-week period which you will use either for broadening or for further specialisation. This can be achieved by following a minor of your choice at Van Hall Larenstein or another university, in the Netherlands or abroad. Examples of minors are Horticulture or Trade Techniques.

The second semester culminates in your graduation project. A company or organisation linked to Fair Trade Development will provide a real problem to you, that needs research and practical solutions.
