Final Phase Tropical Forestry

Bachelor of Forestry and Nature Management

Content programme

First year

The first semester of the first year starts with a project on plantation forestry in Costa Rica, followed by a series of debates on currently important issues in the tropical forestry domain.

During the second half of year one, you spend a work placement on a project in the tropics. The six-month work placement in a developing country is one of the most exciting events in the preparation for a possible career in the tropics. Here you gain experience, a realistic impression of living and working in a tropical country and develop certain skills and a proper attitude. This year, tropical forestry students spent their work placement in amongst others Malaysia (Sabah), Cameroon, El Salvador and The South Pacific region (Fiji Islands and Niue).

In the first semester of the second year, you will prepare a comprehensive project proposal according to logical framework principles, develop a communication plan, and study Geographic Information Systems theoretical concepts. This is followed by the preparation of a state-of-the-art forest management plan, with the Fiji-Islands being the virtual location.

The course is concluded in the second half of year two with the implementation of the research project in a tropical country, the writing of the final bachelor's thesis, and defending it in the colloquium.

Van Hall Larenstein co-operates with the Fachhochschule Rottenburg, offering German students a special programme in Tropical Forestry. Other (one-year) arrangements within an Erasmus or comparable scheme are possible as well.
