Fund-raising for mobile watermakers in Haiti
University of applied sciences Van Hall Larenstein is holding a fund-raising amongst its staff and students to be able to send a number of mobile watermakers to Haiti. These watermakers turn surfacewater into clean drinking water, without the use of chemicals or external electricity.
The idea for this action came from Remi Wagenaar, teammanager parttime Working and studying at Environmental Management. "I watched the images of Haiti and I saw there was much need for clean drinking water. Then I thought of Leo's mobile watermakers." The mobile watermaker was developed a couple of years ago by VHL Leeuwarden teacher Leo Groendijk. Without using chemicals or external electricity, the watermaker can turn between 300 and 600 liters of dirty surface water a day into clean drinking water. The electricity needed by the device is generated by a built-in solar panel.

World Servants
Remi told his idea to Tanja van Heuvelen, teammanager fulltime Environmental Management. Together they contacted their educational director and thus the action started to take shape. From thursday the 21st of january, several collection boxes are placed in the different locations of VHL, where students and staff can put a donation. The donations are used to purchase as many watermakers as possible, at the cost of 1800 ero per watermaker. At this point both Peter Badoux, operational manager, and Gerrit Jeuring, educational director Environment and Life Sciences in Leeuwarden, have each promised to finance one watermaker.
The mobile watermakers will be distributed on the island by aid organisation World Servants, which is operational in Haiti. This organisation is already using the mobile watermakers in the Dominican Republic, Haitis neighbouring country.
