Students Food Technology win second prize Voedingscentrum

Third year students Food Technology at Van Hall Larenstein Amarins Wiersma, Jeanet Roede, Andrys Osinga, Willem-Andries Valk en David Overkempe are runners-up for this year's contest for bachelorstudents, organised by the Dutch Voedingscentrum (Foodcentre).

For their project in the Food & Health module, they developed a healty pizza. It is a square-shaped pizza, which is why they chose the productname 'Square Pizza'. The pizza contains little salt, lots of fibers and vegetables, and organic beef. Furthermore, it is less damaging to the environment, due to lower use of  transport and energy. Because of the choice of ingredients, the pizza complies to the criteria the Voedingscentrum has set for a wholesome meal, which can be eaten on a daily basis. In addition, the product complies to the conditions to be allowed to carry the Dutch 'ik kies bewust' logo ('I am an aware consumer').

The participants in the contest were bachelorstudents of seven foodrelated studies in the Netherlands. They all developed innovative and creative products or concepts, that contribute to consumers' health. The products were presented at the minisymposium 'Healthy and sustainable' on friday, June 4, in The Hague. The best idea won a prize of € 500,-, the second prize was € 350,- and third prize € 250,-. The award was handed out for the sixth time. The jury consisted of representatives of the Dutch ministry of VWS (Public health, wellbeing and sports), trade and industry, the Consumentenbond (consumers' association) and the Voedingscentrum.
During the symposium, representatives of Unilever and Albert Heijn, amongst others, explained their motivation to create healthy and sustainable foodstuff.

The objective of the award is to stimulate future productdevelopers, productmanagers and other managers in the food business to already consider health and sustainability aspects of products during their study.
